Highest Mountain in the East

The rolling ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains, wooded gorges ablaze with fall color and fertile river valleys extend in every direction.

Welcome to the top of the world - at 6,684 feet Mount Mitchell is the highest mountain peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and in all of the eastern United States. More than a mile-high, Mount Mitchell is frequently shrouded in mist. On misty autumn days the close-in fall colors on Mount Mitchell are exceptionally vibrant, creating magical portraits of rock and fall foliage that can be found along the parks many hiking trails.

Mount Mitchell is located about 30 miles from Asheville or Burnsville, and can also be reached by taking NC 128 off of the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 355.3. Mount Mitchell State Park is an extraordinary 1,946-acre wilderness with miles of hiking trails, some short and easy while others are long and strenuous. The observation deck at the summit is reached by a short 980-ft walk through conifer forest from the parking lot. Take a warm jacket as it is often windy at the summit. The seasonal restaurant is open from late-May through October, and is another place to enjoy Mount Mitchell fall colors.
