Cold Mountain North Carolina
Fall Foliage Scenic Drive
This spectacular Cold Mountain North Carolina fall foliage scenic drive around Cold Mountain delivers impressive mountain vistas, waterfalls and stunning fall colors.
The mountain scenery along this scenic loop tour is especially beautiful in autumn when brilliant fall foliage adds splashes of bright color to the already majestic scenery of high forested mountains, deep blue lakes and Looking Glass Falls.
And the story of the fictional town of Cold Mountain North Carolina adds a fascinating element to this fall foliage scenic driving tour.
The drive starts in Brevard North Carolina, a picturesque college mountain town that is home to the renowned Brevard Music Center, a summer institute and festival offering more than 80 public concerts. Brevard also boasts a pretty downtown with good eateries and boutique shopping. Our fall foliage scenic drive starts and ends in Brevard, so you can explore the town either first or last.
These country roads curve through Pisgah National Forest, one of the most biologically diverse wildernesses in America, and around Cold Mountain North Carolina. Fall foliage, with plenty of leaf color, is abundant along this scenic tour as the forest is home to an incredible collection of oak, maple, beech, hickory and dozens of other species of hardwood trees that paint a palette of autumn colors across the autumn forest.
Heading north out of Brevard up US 276 you'll want to stop at Looking Glass Falls, which is right next to the road and take some pictures or walk the steps down to the base of the falls. A little farther on, the Cradle of Forestry center is well worth exploring. The museum tells the story of the first forestry school in America and the history of the nation's forestry service.
The road then climbs to about 4000 feet and crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway before descending along the tumbling east fork of the Pigeon River to the tiny crossroads town of Bethel.
From the crossroads town of Bethel, the scenic tour continues to make a lazy loop around Cold Mountain, North Carolina. This mountain was made famous in the novel Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. The town of Bethel was the model for the fictional town of Cold Mountain. Charles Frazier based his novel's main character, Inman, on his great, great uncle, W.P. Inman who is buried in Bethel.
The 2003 Cold Mountain movie was based on the book Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. In addition to movie stars Jude Law and Nicloe Kidman, Cold Mountain cast included Renee Zellweger and Jack White.
At the Bethel crossroads, you'll turn south on NC 215, Lake Logan Road, and drive past lovely Lake Logan before the road s-curves back up to higher elevations as the fall foliage scenic route winds through more lovely autumn mountain scenery to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Continue on NC 215 beyond the parkway and drive on to US 64 and turn left back into Brevard.
Directions: From Brevard head north on US 276 to follow this fall foliage scenic drive. Go about 31 miles to NC 215, Logan Lake Road. Turn left and follow NC 215 for about 33 miles to US 64 and turn left to drive about 10 miles into Brevard North Carolina.
