Bountiful Brevard NC

Like a millionaire in blue jeans, at first glance Brevard NC looks like just another charming, laid-back mountain town. But beyond its down-home friendliness, Brevard is also home to illustrious Brevard College and the internationally-acclaimed Brevard Music Center.

Brevard, North Carolina

Of particular interest to visitors, the Music Center sponsors the outstanding annual Brevard Music Festival which presents up to 80 public concerts over a seven weeks period from late June to mid-August. Guest artists at the festival have included such musical luminaries as Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma and soprano Renee Fleming.

Brevard NC is not without its slight eccentricities. After the Music Center, the most important thing to know about Brevard is that it is home to a large population of white squirrels, which look much like their grey cousins but due to a genetic difference are snow-white. They are much-loved by local residents, and can often be seen on grassy expanses and in trees around town.

WSQL, The White Squirrel Radio Station, Brevard, North Carolina There is even a local radio station, WSQL AM, that calls itself the "White Squirrel Station". If you've never seen a radio station in operation, you can actually watch through a window on West Main Street as station manager Wanda Lu Paxton broadcasts a variety of country and pop music, as well as updates on church suppers, swap meets and the news of the day, from their street-front sound studio.

Signs Brevard, North Carolina A stroll along Brevard's Main Street will reveal some intriguing shops, including Celestial Mountain Music, which specializes in regionally crafted banjos, guitars, dobros, and dulcimers. Also on Main Street is the great Brevard Antique Mall, with 20,000 square feet of antique furniture, quilts, glassware and more. Attached to the mall is the Underground Salvage Company where you can find high quality salvaged building materials, and cool stuff like copper lined bathtubs, stained glass doors, and all sorts of antique house parts.

Red Wolf Gallery, Brevard, North Carolina
Two fine art galleries stand side by side on East Main. Red Wolf Gallery, displays the works of international landscape painter Anna Dergara; and Number 7 Arts, a cooperative gallery represents the works of top mountain artists. Also at this end of town is downtown Brevard's best coffee shop, Quotations, named for many literary or just fun quotations that adorn the walls.

Rocky's Grill, Brevard, North CarolinaIf you are ready for lunch, you can enjoy it with a big side of nostalgia at Rocky's Grill and Soda - a real 50's era red-stool soda fountain where the burgers are thick and juicy, the chili dogs are satisfying, and its easy to believe that the Fonz might walk in at any moment. A few steps away, children of all ages should stop in OP Taylor's, the wild, colorful and very fun "Coolest Toy Store on the Planet".

Hwy 276 near Brevard, North Carolina Beyond Brevard's downtown, the spectacular beauty of the mountains awaits along the region's many scenic byways and hiking trails. Just east of town, Hwy 276 winds through the Pisgah National Forest up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Along the way you can stop to admire the stunning roadside beauty of Looking Glass Falls. A little farther on is Sliding Rock State Park, where in summer swimmers slide down a 60 foot water-washed granite rock and drop ten feet into the brisk, clear pool of a mountain stream. Just up the road is the fascinating Cradle of Forestry Center, that tells the story of the creation and growth of Americas Forestry Service.

There are excellent hiking areas near Brevard in Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock State Park, Graveyard Fields and Mount Pisgah on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and in the acclaimed Shining Rock Wilderness.

Stream, Hwy 276 near Brevard, North CarolinaBrevard NC is also "Waterfall Central". This section of the Blue Ridge Mountains is regularly drenched by rains caused by warm moist air from South Carolina and Georgia rising as it reaches the mountains. All that water creates streams, and streams create waterfalls. In addition to Looking Glass Falls, there are a dozen or more waterfalls in the Brevard NC area that can be reached with an easy to moderate hike. They include the lovely Conastee Falls south of Brevard NC on Hwy 276, and Bridal Veil Falls which tumbles off an overhang that allows hikers to walk behind the cascade. Another popular scenic drive in the area follows Hwy 64 from downtown Brevard NC south and east through Pisgah Forest of the southern Blue Ridge. This lovely mountain highway passes the resort communities of Lake Toxaway and Sapphire Lakes before entering the charming crossroads community of Cashiers, and continuing on its way to the bustling mountain town of Highlands.
