Looking Glass Falls near Brevard, North CarolinaLooking Glass Falls Heading from Brevard NC to the Blue Ridge Parkway on Hwy 276, watch on your right for a roadside parking area where you can follow the walkway to an overlook that offers a fine view of this cascade as it drops 60 feet into the rocky gorge. A broad stairway leads to the foot of the falls where you can stand in the light mist created by the tumbling water and enjoy views of the falls and the sparkling mountain stream.

Sliding Rock A short distance beyond Looking Glass Falls, watch on your left for the entrance to Sliding Rock State Park (admission charged). This is a favorite summertime destination for overheated youth, who come to slide down a sixty foot expanse of water-smoothed granite before tumbling ten feet down into the chilly waters of the stream. The fun is not limited to the young, as folks of any age can join in. Cutoff jeans are a good idea as the rock has been known to wear through thinner material after a few slides.

Cradle of Forestry Center near Brevard, North CarolinaCradle of Forestry Center This one-of-a-kind facility traces the growth of modern forestry in America from its origins. In 1898 a small group of forestry students funded by George Vanderbilt and instructed by European forestry professor Dr. Carl A Schenk, built the first forestry school here. A reproduction of the original schoolhouse for the Biltmore Forestry School and a romantically rustic forestry agents log cabin are on display. But the main attraction is the very well executed Forest Discovery Center that features numerous displays and exhibits that follow the development of conservation and forestry from Schenk's school to the modern practices of the US Forestry Service. The center also hosts a regular schedule of music and entertainment events.
