River Bend Farm
There is a gentle charm to River Bend Farm. This isn't the first, or even second, place you should see on Biltmore Estate in Asheville. But it makes a great post-Biltmore house tour stop, especially if you have kids with you.
Biltmore Estate, now as it was in George Vanderbilt's time, is a self supporting working estate. In the early days most of the estate's money was earned through intensive farming enhanced with the latest scientific methods. Thousands of acres of the Biltmore Estate were dedicated to dairies, cattle and vegetable farms.
Today, that era is reflected in the restored barns and outbuildings that are River Bend Farm. The entertainment here is low key but fun, kids can sit on old-time tractors or wagons and see displays of historic farm equipment.
There is an interactive play area and a video of Biltmore Farm life in the early 20th century. There are scheduled demonstrations by period-costumed interpreters of woodworking, blacksmithing, weaving and other traditional Appalachian farm activities.
River Bend Farm also offers horse-drawn wagon rides from April-December, as well as a country themed gift shop and most popular of all, an ice cream parlor.
