Getting to Asheville
Whether You Fly into Asheville Airport, Another Regional Airport or Drive to Asheville and Western North Carolina,
Here are some Helpful Travel Tips

Getting to Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville Airport is the largest airport in the mountains and often the first choice for air travelers visiting Asheville and the mountains of Western North Carolina. We always start by checking for direct flights to Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) when arranging a trip for ourselves or when we plan trips for others.

In addition to Asheville Airport, there are also four other nearby regional airports and one of these airports may offer a more convenient arrival location, better schedule or a cheaper flight for your vacation or business trip.

  • McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville, TN for visitors traveling to Cherokee, Bryson City and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

  • Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), SC for visitors traveling to Asheville, Brevard, Cashiers, Flat Rock, Hendersonville or Highlands.

  • Tri-Cities Airport (TRI) near Johnson City, TN for those visiting Burnsville, Penland or Spruce Pine.

  • Hickory Regional Airport (HKY), NC for visitors to Boone, Blowing Rock and Valle Crucis.

Bargain hunters may find that flying into the major hub airports located in Atlanta, Georgia or Charlotte, North Carolina, and then driving 2 to 4 hours to their mountain destination is cheaper, faster and more convenient for them.

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta GA

  • Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in Charlotte NC

The best airport for your arrival may depend on where you are flying from as well as where you will be staying in the mountains. We suggest checking flight schedules and prices for Asheville Airport and at least one additional airport before finalizing your flight plan.

As you compare flights into the Asheville NC Airport with flights into nearby airports, you may want to consider the driving distances between Airports and downtown Asheville

And you may find that WNC driving distances from the regional airports to major mountain towns is helpful as well.

Finally, it's a good idea to make arrangements ahead of time to rent a car at the airport, particularly if you are arriving at Asheville Airport. The mountain region offers very little in the way of public transportation. Some of the larger hotels and resorts can often arrange airport transport, and Asheville transportation options include a public bus system as well as taxi and limousine services. But if you plan to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or head out and explore the National Forests and State Parks of Western North Carolina, then you will want to rent a car. We have put together a special page of tips on Asheville car rentals and driving in the mountains of Western North Carolina

Driving To Asheville and the WNC Mountains

Finding a good driving route to your Western North Carolina destination is easy. Two interstate highways pass through Asheville. Interstate 40 passes through Asheville traveling eastward to Raleigh, or westward to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where it turns northward to Knoxville TN. Interstate 26 (although it is technically an east-west highway) travels north and south through Asheville.

There is an excellent system of secondary U.S. highways and state roads that will take you anywhere in the mountains you wish to go. A word of caution however, these roads often follow winding mountain valleys so travel times may be longer than anticipated.
